Chabad of the North Coast

THE SHUL

Shalom Aleichem

Our Shul is only feet away from the warm Indian Ocean. The Shul is really a "Shtiebel on the Beach"  Minyanim are throughout the year on Shabbosim and Yommim Tovim as  well as longweekends, school holidays and we make minyans for those who have Yarzheits too.  The Shul is Nusach Ari, accoring to the precepts outlined by the Holy Arizal, yet we accomadate and make feel very welcome, each and every Yid, irrespective of his or her level of adherence or affiliation. Next time you are in Umhlanga, come and Daven with us.

MINYANS: During the week Shachrit is at 8am. Mincha Maariv is at 6:15pm. On Shabbos we daven Mincha at 6:15pm followed by Kabbolos Shabbos and Maariv. Shabbos morning the minyan is at 9am followed by Kiddish and a L'chaim. In peak season the is always overflow. The shul/shtiebel comfortably holds 60 people. In season that swells Baruch Hashem to more than 250 Yidden. We accomadate our guest by setting up a gorgeous marquee on the lawns infront of the Chabad House, taking our visitors even closer to the ocean. Dolphins and whales are common sitings during inspiring Fabrengens on Shabbos mornings. Shabbos hospitality is always available.

A Lighthouse

Chabad has been in Umhlanga Rocks for almost 15 years. Originally providing minyanim for the holidaymaker, the Chabad House now serves as a Outreach Centre too throughout  Kwazulu-Natal. In the early years Rabbinical students would come down to the coast to accomadate the needs for the holidaymakers.  (The picture on the left was used for  some of the original advertising of the minyans in the local council libary)  They were often assisted by the Shluchim in Johannesburg. Soon the need was to have a man down by the coast.  The Chabad House today is  situated only meters away from the ocean and the Umhlanga Rocks lighthouse, sending our own message of direction in the ways that a Jew should conduct him or herself.
